Desmond's Natural Homebirth Story

So Desmond will be six months in ten days, and I'm just now getting around to writing this.  Better late than never, I guess.  Desmond was born on April 9th at 1:22am in our home.  It was a beautiful, amazing, incredibly empowering experience and it could not have gone any better.  We quite literally woke up, had a baby, and went right back to bed.  What more could you ask for, right?   So, that's the short version of the story.  Here's the rest....

Desmond Gene, April 9, 2014, 1:22am; 7 lb. 10 oz.
Somewhere in my mind, I had April 8th in my mind as the day that Desmond would join our family.  So when I woke up April 8th to contractions about 12 minutes apart, I really wasn't surprised.  I went about our normal day expecting for things to pick up, but.... they didn't.  All day long, mild contractions somewhere between 10-15 minutes apart.  We went to Target and walked around, I cleaned the house, and made sure all of the birth stuff was in order... just incase.  Around 7pm, I decided it would probably be a good idea to give the midwife a heads up, just incase labor started overnight.  The midwife assistant came out and checked me.  I was barely dilated and only slightly effaced.  She timed my contractions for an hour and there was no progression.  So, around 9pm, she sent me to bed and told me to call if anything changed.  She really didn't sound optimistic, so I didn't expect anything to happen.  Though, before we went to bed, we did decide to put the additional sheets /mattress protector on the bed.  We put Charlie to sleep and climbed in bed around 9:30.  I fully expected to wake up the next morning still incredibly pregnant.

May Natural Living Blog Carnival: Babies Don't Keep

Welcome to the May 2014 Natural Living Blog Carnival: Green Moms. This post was written for inclusion in the monthly Natural Living Blog Carnival hosted by Happy Mothering and Crunchy Farm Baby through the Green Moms Network. This month, our members are talking about how they take time to care for themselves. Stop by all of the posts to get green ideas on how you can take better care of yourself .

Babies Don't Keep

As many of you know, we welcomed our second son, Desmond, into the world on April 9th (birth story coming soon, I promise!).  I'm sure that any of you with more than one child can relate to the fact that there hasn't been much "me" time lately.  So when it came time to write my post for this month's carnival, it was hard for me to come up with a post about ways that I take time for myself.  Then, one of my fellow mommy friends shared the above poem on Facebook.  And it got me thinking.... it's ok that I'm not taking a lot of time for myself right now.  There's really not much I want to do other than cuddle my new baby, and that's ok.

My sink may have dishes in it from yesterday, my laundry may be piled as high as the washing machine, and I honestly cannot remember the last time I took a shower by myself, but you know what?  My tiny little Desmond slept peacefully on my chest for a solid three hours this afternoon; and Charlie and I spent a crazy amount of time building a block house for a spider this evening after dinner.  And THOSE are the things that I did for myself today - I made memories with my littles.

One day too soon, my children will be grown and I'll be caught up on chores and will be able to soak in the bathtub with a glass of wine all evening if I choose.  But for now, you'll find me squished between my babies in our family bed, enjoying every cuddly moment that I can get.

So cuddle your babies, mamas.  Make memories with your older ones.  Know that it's ok to genuinely enjoy being with your children and not wish that you were alone.
